According to this report in the Newcastle Herald, the Hunter is failing to honour its fallen servicemen by not having a war cemetery in which to bury them, an RSL sub-branch stated.

A push to establish a war cemetery has coincided with the approach to this year's Anzac Day.

Wangi RSL sub-branch president David Edmond said servicemen killed in wars should have the honour of being buried at a Hunter war cemetery.

He said soldiers killed in conflicts in Vietnam, Korea, Malaya, Indonesia, Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan had been denied that chance.

He said Sandgate War Cemetery, which has 73 World War II burials, had more space but appeared closed to new graves.
