Melbourne's Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust has issued a statement relating to the Coronavirus pandemic:

With the prevalence of coronavirus (COVID-19) in Australia slowly increasing, the wellbeing of our staff, customers, business partners and communities is our top priority.

By close of business Friday 13 March 2020 we have not been made aware of any cases of the virus among our staff, or visitors to functions or events at any of our sites. There is no impact to funeral services at this stage.

In close consultation with the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), GMCT is reviewing our systems and processes to adapt to any scenario that may arise in the future. The Executive Team has met frequently over the last two weeks to determine how we will respond to COVID-19.

Remote service delivery

We are currently equipping a number of GMCT staff to access remote working arrangements so they can continue to serve our families, communities and business partners.

We will be prepared to facilitate meetings with our clients and business partners utilising digital platforms should that action be required.

If you have an upcoming appointment with GMCT that you feel uncomfortable attending in person, we are more than happy to facilitate these meetings online or by phone. Please contact us to discuss how we can best work with you.

Looking after our staff

We have provided staff with the necessary hygiene equipment to ensure we are doing our best to safeguard against the rapid spread of COVID-19.

We have asked staff members showing signs or symptoms of illness to remain at home and seek medical advice, and to only return to work once cleared of any significant illness.

 Community events deferred

In line with Australian government advice to minimise social gatherings, we will be cancelling or deferring all planned community events until further notice. Please keep an eye on our website for updates.

 What won’t change

There is no impact to funeral services. We will still conduct burials, cremations and other interments, and will continue to maintain safe and accessible cemetery grounds.

Our chapels and function rooms are still available for bookings, and we have asked our cleaners to ramp up their cleaning schedule in line with best practice to keep our families and business partners safe.

Our phone and online channels will remain fully operational, however as we may be operating with a reduced workforce, please be patient if wait times are higher than usual.

 Our commitment to you

GMCT will continue to closely monitor the information being released from the World Health Organisation, Australia's Chief Medical Officer and the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services for any updates.

We will continue to work with peak bodies and industry groups to ensure we are aligned and able to deliver our essential services to the families and communities we all serve. If you have any questions or concerns through this period please do not hesitate to contact us.
