The small building, in the picturesque Austrian town of Hallstatt, is the final resting place of more than 2000 people, whose bones and skulls are stacked on shelves in the eerie ossuary.

Set in the grounds of Hallstatt cemetery, the house has been used as overflow storage for the graveyard since the 1700s, when residents started running out of room to bury their dead, The Sun reports.

And relatives were stacked next to each other in the house, which is adorned with spooky piles of bleached-white bones.

Before long, locals took to painting the names and dates of death on their loved ones’ skulls, in addition to messages of courage and symbols of love.
