The ABC reports that an independent inquiry is underway into Rookwood cemetery in Sydney's west after concerns from some community groups about problems such as pricing and governance.
Rookwood cemetery is one of Australia's largest and most culturally diverse cemeteries.
In 2012, five independent religious trusts within Rookwood were merged to become the Rookwood General Cemeteries Reserve Trust.
A spokesman for the Department of Primary Industries said the current inquiry is in response to issues raised by Jewish and Muslim communities.
He said Cemeteries and Crematoria NSW (CCNSW) would oversee the independent inquiry.
CCNSW is the statutory body with strategic and regulatory oversight of the interment industry and is responsible for administering the Cemeteries and Crematoria Act 2013.
"The Government has asked our board to engage a consultant to independently look at pricing, governance issues and also related interment issues," CCNSW chairman Stepan Kerkyasharian said.
