Rookwood Cemetery in Sydney’s west is being billed as Australia’s most unlikely new tourist destination, with the state government keen to position it as our equivalent of Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris or Arlington National Cemetery near Washington DC.

And while it may not have Jim Morrison’s grave — nor John F. Kennedy’s — there’s still plenty to entice those who like to travel off the beaten path.

Fiona Heslop, the chief executive of the trust that owns Rookwood, says the cemetery already sees its fair share of backpackers.
