CONSTRUCTION is finally set to begin on a new mausoleum at Murray Pines Cemetery in Mildura to accommodate the traditional burial wishes of many families in the Italian community.

Work on the new structure, to be made from concrete with marble facing, will begin within two weeks.

Plans to design and build the new mausoleum, a structure of above-ground crypts, have been in the works for more than three years after space in the existing mausoleum – the only one in the district – was exhausted.

Mildura Cemetery Trust executive officer David Folvig said management and Mildura Rural City Council decided to proceed with the new mausoleum after a community meeting showed strong demand.

Rather than build a single, large structure similar to the existing mausoleum, the council and cemetery management opted to create a smaller mausoleum with just 24 crypts. Once its space has been exhausted, as many as six 18-crypt mausoleums would then be constructed nearby, with the cemetery trust estimating as many as eight to 10 crypts would be occupied each year.
