It is reported in the Daily Telegraph that "The NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) has developed a new proposal that allows for the expansion of Botany Cemetery while retaining the 150-year-old market gardens."
The proposal to expand the cemetery without encroaching on the market gardens land is pinned on Randwick Council agreeing to facilitate the addition of 3.8ha of unused council road running both sides of Military Rd to Botany Cemetery.
Under the new proposal, that has the support of NSW Lands pending council approval, all existing market garden lands would be retained, a DPI spokesman said.
The cemetery would gain an additional 3.6ha via a Crown reserve and Crown road, running between Bicentennial Park and the cemetery. Part of the Crown road would also be added to the market gardens for use as a drainage channel.
