headstonesovergrownThe New South Wales Government is defending its legislation to re-use graves to help address a shortage of burial sites across Sydney.

The Cemeteries and Crematoria Bill passed the state's Lower House last week, but the Opposition is calling for it to be postponed before a vote is taken in the Upper House.

 

The legislation would introduce renewable tenure for graves in public cemeteries giving the option for plots to be opened up and reused after 25 years. Opposition spokesman Steve Whan says the changes lack community support.
