WestTrc-SmythchapelTHE City Council is set to oppose plans to expand West Terrace Cemetery, which is facing a dire shortage of burial space, according to Tim Williams writing in the Daily Telegraph.

The article says the Adelaide Cemeteries Authority has earmarked Edwards Park to the south and areas as far north as Sir Donald Bradman Drive to extend the footprint of the historic burial ground.

Its new management plan for the cemetery says room for new plots will run out within three years. But the Adelaide Park Lands Authority this week is likely to recommend the council reject any move allowing further encroachment into the green belt.

Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood, who is also the parklands authority's presiding member, said the parklands should provide services "for living people rather than the departed".
