The NSW Government is committed to ensuring that current and future generations have equitable and affordable access to cemetery and crematoria services, including the option of a traditional burial in a cemetery close to their community. Projections indicate that available cemetery space across NSW may be exhausted within 30-40 years. This may occur much sooner in some of the State's oldest metropolitan cemeteries. Land acquisition for cemeteries and crematoria and better use of existing cemetery space will be essential in delivering the Government's vision for a sustainable, equitable and transparent interment industry.

The Government is continuing with stage two of its landmark cemeteries and crematoria reforms with the release of draft legislation. The new legislation will regulate cemetery and crematorium operations across all three sectors of the interment industry. Its primary purpose is to ensure that there is sufficient land to meet current and future burial needs in NSW and that people continue to have access to a range of interment options.
