  • Goulburn Post Editor: Stick to the plot!

    Further to the story about the Marulan Action Group's protest against the Islamic cemetery development application,  the Goulburn Post has an interesting editorial on the matter.

    IT would have far better if attendants at yesterday’s rally against an Islamic Cemetery had stuck to the issues. The Post understands that speakers before the protest were urged to address planning matters rather than touch on religious divisions. But as one woman stated, it was ‘the elephant in the room.’

  • Goulburn: The Forest Cemetery caretakers get their title.

    Some time ago we told you about how the caretakers of a district cemetery near Goulburn in NSW who were seething that the Council wanted to sell the facility for unpaid rates. In what must be a relief to the caretakers, NSW Lands and Forestry Minister Paul Toole is now reported to have handed over the title deeds of the cemetery to new owners, The Forest Cemetery Committee Incorporated, whose members have lovingly cared for the graves over many years.

  • Goulburn's historic cemeteries get some TLC

    The Goulburn Post (NSW, AU) tells us that the oldest cemeteries in Goulburn sit in disrepair and neglect - fallen headstones, weeds and an all consuming layer of mould and moss cover the graves. A group of history buffs, known as The Friends of Goulburn's Historic Cemeteries,  banded together last August  to fix the problem.

  • Islamic Cemetery Proposal at Marulan draws protests

    marulan islamic cemetery protestThe Goulburn Post reports Marulan Action Group, formed last year, hosted a protest some 130 strong in Belmore Park on Sunday against the proposal of an  Islamic cemetery at Marulan.  Its proponents have pledged to submit a modified development application next month.

    It comes one year after the original DA was lodged and amid growing community discontent.

    News from Goulburn, NSW, this day has it that "(the Council's) Director of Planning and Development Louise Wakefield confirmed that some 120 public submissions had been received regarding the proposed cemetery off Highland Way.

    The Al Mabarrat Society is proposing the $1,730,000 project across 3.45 hectares, amid continuing controversy."

    According to the Goulburn Post today, the caretakers of a district cemetery are seething that Council wants to sell the facility for unpaid rates.

    Crookwell woman Edith Medway, who has a close family association with the cemetery, described it as holy ground.

    “We’re very, very angry,” she told the Post.
