The NSW Government has released the draft Greater Sydney Water Strategy for public comment. The draft strategy is a long-term plan to ensure a resilient and secure water supply for the people of Sydney, the Illawarra and Blue Mountains.
The Greater Sydney Water Strategy charts a long-term path for the NSW Government’s management of water resources over the next 20 to 40 years. The draft strategy sets a vision, priorities and actions to support economic growth and community wellbeing by providing confidence in the sustainability of Greater Sydney’s water supply to meet growth and adapt to a changing climate.
The draft strategy has been developed taking into account the lessons learnt in recent years with the extreme and prolonged 2017-2020 drought and the impacts of subsequent bushfires and unprecedented floods on water security and certainty.
The draft strategy is linked to the NSW Government’s broader planning frameworks for Greater Sydney and will support delivery of the Greater Sydney Region Plan—A Metropolis of Three Cities and the Premier’s priorities for cooling and greening Greater Sydney with increased tree canopy and green spaces. It identifies the following five key priority areas to guide the future of water in Greater Sydney over a 20-40-year timeframe:
- We understand how much water we need and when.
- Our water supply systems are sustainable for the long-term and resilient to extreme events.
- Our city is green, liveable and prosperous.
- Our waterways and landscapes are healthy.
- Water management and services meet community needs.
To provide members of the community and stakeholders with a chance to have their say, the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment is holding an online community information session.
We would like to invite a representative of your organisation to attend this event. The community information session will be held from 11.00am to 1.00pm on 14 October 2021 and representatives of your organisation can register here.
Consultation on the draft strategy is open until 8 November 2021. We welcome your feedback on the draft strategy and invite submissions which you can provide via an online survey on the department’s website. After the public consultation period we will consider and incorporate the views, ideas and concerns received into the final Greater Sydney Water Strategy, which will be made publicly available.
